New nerve block could cut opioid use after sleeve gastrectomy
NCT ID NCT06515691
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether an ultrasound-guided nerve block called M-TAPA can reduce pain and the need for opioid painkillers after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Sixty adults scheduled for this weight-loss surgery will receive the block while under anesthesia. Researchers will measure how much opioid they use in the first 24 hours and their pain scores.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
M-TAPA nerve block (local anesthetic injection)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a better way to manage pain after weight-loss surgery, reducing the need for strong painkillers.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 60 participants. The block may not significantly reduce pain or opioid use, and there are risks like infection or allergic reaction.
