Night-time drug may cut delirium risk in elderly heart surgery patients
NCT ID NCT03624595
First seen May 03, 2026 · Last updated May 03, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether giving a low dose of dexmedetomidine (a mild sedative) at night can prevent delirium—sudden confusion and disorientation—in older adults after heart surgery. Researchers enrolled 504 patients aged 60-89 who had heart surgery with a heart-lung machine. The drug was infused overnight to improve sleep and reduce delirium, which is common after such procedures and linked to worse outcomes.
