Chill out: cold breathing tubes might ease Post-Surgery sore throat
NCT ID NCT06713343
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether storing a laryngeal mask airway (a breathing tube used during general anesthesia) at a cold temperature (10-12°C) instead of room temperature (22-25°C) could reduce sore throat after surgery. 172 adults having elective surgery were randomly assigned to one of the two groups. Researchers then asked patients about sore throat, trouble swallowing, hoarseness, and cough at several time points after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Laryngeal mask airway stored at low temperature (10-12°C) vs room temperature (22-25°C)
What this could lead to
If cooling LMAs reduces sore throat, hospitals could adopt this simple, low-cost practice to improve patient comfort after surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study with no blinding, so results may not apply widely. The temperature difference is modest, so the effect may be minimal or absent.
