Liver ultrasound may spot hidden heart trouble after surgery

NCT ID NCT06777355

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This completed study tested whether a liver ultrasound could detect right-sided heart failure after cardiac surgery. Researchers measured blood flow in the portal vein using Doppler ultrasound in 32 high-risk patients within 24 hours of surgery. The goal was to see if this simple, non-invasive test could replace or supplement the current gold standard (a catheter in the heart) for diagnosing right ventricular dysfunction.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a non-invasive way to predict heart complications after surgery, potentially improving patient monitoring.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center study with only 32 participants. The findings are exploratory and need confirmation in larger trials before changing practice.
