Don't wait to die: study finds faster kidney transplants boost survival for elderly

NCT ID NCT07436338

Summary

This study looked at whether older patients with kidney failure live longer if they get a transplant from a living donor who isn't a perfect blood or tissue match, instead of waiting for a perfectly matched deceased donor. Researchers compared survival rates for over 1,800 patients aged 60 and older from two Korean hospitals. They found that using special treatments to prepare patients for a 'mismatched' living donor transplant may offer a survival advantage over waiting, which often involves risky dialysis.
