Liver transplant kidney mystery: biopsy study aims to uncover hidden damage

NCT ID NCT07300709

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study will take small kidney tissue samples from 42 liver transplant patients who have hepatorenal syndrome (HRS), a condition where the kidneys stop working properly due to severe liver disease. Researchers want to see if the kidneys are actually damaged or just temporarily affected. By analyzing the tissue, they hope to better understand HRS and improve future treatments.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could reveal whether kidney damage in hepatorenal syndrome is permanent, leading to better diagnosis and treatment strategies.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage observational study with only 42 participants. It is not testing a new treatment, so direct patient benefits are unlikely.
