Personalized ventilation for ARDS: early trial halted, results uncertain

NCT ID NCT04012073

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether setting a ventilator based on each patient's lung volume could improve outcomes for people with moderate-to-severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The approach used a bedside measurement to tailor the pressure applied during breathing. However, the trial was stopped early after enrolling only 18 participants, so it is not possible to draw firm conclusions about its effectiveness.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Invasive mechanical ventilation with individualized positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) guided by end-expiratory lung volume (EELV) measurement

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could help doctors set ventilators more precisely for each ARDS patient, potentially reducing lung injury and improving survival.

What could go wrong

The trial was terminated early with only 18 participants, so results are very limited. It is unclear if the method works better than standard care, and any benefits remain unproven.
