Can a Low-Dose clot buster boost recovery after stroke clot removal?
NCT ID NCT07727395
First seen Jul 27, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 5 times
Summary
This trial investigates whether giving a low dose of the clot-busting drug alteplase directly into the brain artery, right after successful mechanical clot removal, can improve recovery in people with a severe stroke caused by a large vessel blockage. About 416 adults who have had a stroke and achieved good blood flow restoration within 24 hours will be randomly assigned to receive either the extra drug plus standard care or standard care alone. The main goal is to see if more people regain functional independence—being able to carry out daily activities without help—at 90 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a clot-busting drug called alteplase, given directly into the brain artery after mechanical clot removal
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this approach could become a new standard treatment to improve functional independence after a severe stroke.
- What could go wrong
- This is a Phase 3 trial, but the added drug may increase the risk of bleeding in the brain. The benefit may not outweigh the risk for all patients.
