Tighter blood sugar targets during pregnancy: could they protect newborns?
NCT ID NCT05124808
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two blood sugar targets for overweight or obese women with gestational diabetes. One group aims for stricter goals (fasting under 90 mg/dL, after meals under 120 mg/dL), while the other follows standard targets (fasting under 95 mg/dL, after meals under 140 mg/dL). Researchers will track whether the stricter approach reduces newborn health problems like large birth weight, low blood sugar, jaundice, or breathing issues. The trial plans to enroll 828 participants across multiple centers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Intensive glycemic targets (stricter blood sugar goals)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that tighter blood sugar control reduces newborn complications like large birth weight and jaundice in women with gestational diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase NA trial, so results are not yet known. Stricter targets may increase the risk of low blood sugar in the mother or be hard to maintain. The benefit for babies is uncertain.
