New strategy aims to shield Seniors' brains during heart surgery
NCT ID NCT07048002
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a specific set of anesthesia targets, called NeuroFirst, can reduce silent brain injury and thinking problems in older adults having heart surgery. About 900 patients aged 60 and older will be randomly assigned to either the NeuroFirst approach or standard care. Researchers will use brain scans and thinking tests to compare outcomes up to one year after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- NeuroFirst target bundle (a set of anesthesia management goals including blood pressure, brain activity, oxygen levels, and temperature)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a standard way to protect the brain during heart surgery, reducing the risk of silent strokes and memory or thinking problems afterward.
- What could go wrong
- This is a single study testing a bundle of targets, not a new drug. It may not show a clear benefit, and the results might not apply to all heart surgery patients or hospitals.
