Can a simple antibiotic or immunoglobulin shield blood cancer patients from deadly infections?
NCT ID NCT07202078
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two infection-prevention strategies in 900 people with blood cancers like myeloma and leukemia. One group gets an antibiotic (co-trimoxazole) daily, while another receives immunoglobulin infusions every few weeks. The goal is to see which approach better prevents severe infections and improves survival. The trial uses an adaptive design, allowing researchers to add new treatments as they go.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Co-trimoxazole (antibiotic) or intravenous/subcutaneous immunoglobulin
What this could lead to
If successful, this could establish a standard way to prevent life-threatening infections in people with blood cancers, reducing hospital stays and improving quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is an early-to-mid stage trial (Phase 2/3) with 900 participants. The treatments may not reduce infections as hoped, or side effects like allergies could limit their use.
