Steroid shot after stroke may boost recovery, new trial hopes

NCT ID NCT07516522

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving the steroid methylprednisolone right after a stroke clot removal procedure can help patients recover better. About 210 adults who had a major stroke from a blocked artery in the brain will be randomly assigned to receive either the steroid or a placebo. The main goals are to see if the treatment reduces bleeding in the brain and lowers the risk of death.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
methylprednisolone (a steroid anti-inflammatory drug)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could become a standard add-on treatment to improve recovery and reduce complications after stroke clot removal.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 2 trial with 210 participants, so results are still early. Steroids can increase infection risk, and the benefit may not be large enough to change practice.
