Could a simple shot ease achy hands? new trial investigates
NCT ID NCT07371572
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Phase 3 trial tests whether a single steroid injection (methylprednisolone) can reduce pain in people with hand osteoarthritis. 212 participants will receive either a high dose, a low dose, or a placebo, and report their pain after 4 weeks. After 16 weeks, everyone can receive the injection on demand for up to 48 weeks. The goal is to see if this treatment offers safe, effective pain relief.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
methylprednisolone (a steroid injection)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, occasional injection to reduce hand pain for people with osteoarthritis.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 3 trial, but it only measures pain after one injection. The effect may be short-lived, and steroids have risks like joint damage with repeated use.
