NCT ID NCT06482567

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a short intervention called iCOVER, designed to help people quickly regain focus and calm after an acute stress reaction. The intervention takes just 60-120 seconds and can be given by peers or medical staff. Researchers will enroll 450 adults in an emergency department who show signs of distress or dissociation, and compare iCOVER to usual care or simple reassurance. The goal is to see if iCOVER improves thinking and functioning right after the stressful event.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

iCOVER (a brief behavioral intervention using steps: Identify, Connect, Offer commitment, Verify facts, Establish order, Request action)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a quick, easy-to-use tool for peers or medical staff to help someone snap out of an acute stress reaction and think clearly again.

What could go wrong

This is an early efficacy trial with 450 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is very brief and may not work for everyone or in all stressful situations.
