New tooth-cleaning gadget aims to banish dental drill pain
NCT ID NCT07482280
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a special ultrasonic handpiece that sprays hydroxyapatite (a natural enamel mineral) can reduce tooth sensitivity during dental cleanings for people with gum disease. Forty adults with moderate to severe periodontitis had half their mouth cleaned with the new device and the other half with a standard ultrasonic tool. Researchers measured changes in gum pocket depth and sensitivity over 6 months to see if the new method is more comfortable and effective.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
hydroxyapatite
What this could lead to
If effective, this could offer a gentler, less painful option for dental cleanings in people with gum disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The improvement in sensitivity may be modest or not last long-term.
