Pool workouts may soothe diabetic nerve pain

NCT ID NCT07260214

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether doing exercises in a heated pool (hydrotherapy) can reduce pain, improve balance, and boost quality of life for people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Thirty-four adults with type 2 diabetes and nerve damage will be randomly assigned to either hydrotherapy or land-based exercise for 12 weeks. Researchers will measure changes in pain, sensation, balance, and self-care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
hydrotherapy (exercises in a heated pool)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a drug-free way to reduce nerve pain and improve balance and daily life for people with diabetic neuropathy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 34 people. The results may not apply to everyone, and hydrotherapy might not be more helpful than land-based exercise.
