Simple IV fluids may shield kidneys during new heart ablation technique
NCT ID NCT07490808
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether giving extra fluids (saline) through an IV during and after a heart procedure called pulsed field ablation can prevent acute kidney injury. The procedure is used to treat atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm problem, but can sometimes harm the kidneys. About 290 adults with atrial fibrillation will be randomly assigned to receive either the extra fluids or standard care. The main goal is to see if hydration reduces the chance of kidney damage while in the hospital.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
0.9% sodium chloride (saline) given intravenously
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to protect kidneys during pulsed field ablation for atrial fibrillation.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial at one center. The hydration strategy may not reduce kidney injury and could cause fluid overload in some patients.
