Walking away from stroke: simple step goals may stabilize artery plaque

NCT ID NCT04053166

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a 6-month home-based walking program could reduce dangerous bleeding inside carotid artery plaque in people with significant blockages but no stroke symptoms. Fifty-six participants either followed an individualized step goal (with coaching) or received usual care. The researchers used MRI to measure plaque vulnerability before and after the program.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

individualized home-based physical activity (walking program with step goals and coaching)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that a simple walking program helps stabilize carotid plaque, potentially reducing stroke risk without surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early study with only 56 participants, so results may not apply widely. The intervention is modest (increasing steps), and the main outcome is an MRI marker, not actual stroke reduction.
