Could vitamin c save lives after cardiac arrest? new trial investigates
NCT ID NCT05817851
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 2 trial tests whether giving high-dose vitamin C and thiamine early after cardiac arrest can help patients recover from shock. About 234 adults who remain unconscious after cardiac arrest and need blood pressure support will be randomly assigned to get either standard care or standard care plus high-dose vitamin C for three days. The main goal is to see if vitamin C helps patients come off blood pressure medication faster.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
high-dose vitamin C (ascorbic acid) plus thiamine (vitamin B1)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, safe way to reduce shock and organ failure after cardiac arrest, potentially improving survival and brain recovery.
What could go wrong
This is an early phase 2 trial with 234 participants, so results are not definitive. High-dose vitamin C may not improve outcomes and could cause side effects like kidney stones.
