Personalized antibiotics may beat standard therapy for stubborn stomach bug
NCT ID NCT05332444
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether choosing antibiotics based on lab tests of the bacteria works better than standard antibiotic combinations for people whose H. pylori infection hasn't been cured before. About 450 adults will receive either a tailored or standard regimen for 14 days. The goal is to see which approach clears the infection more effectively and with fewer side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Proton pump inhibitor (rabeprazole) and antibiotics (amoxicillin, clarithromycin, levofloxacin, metronidazole, tetracycline) plus bismuth
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that tailoring antibiotics to the specific bacteria is more effective than standard treatments for stubborn H. pylori infections.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 trial, so the treatments are already approved, but results may not apply to all populations. Antibiotic resistance could still limit success.
