Can diabetes drugs tame joint inflammation in psoriatic arthritis?

NCT ID NCT07111494

First seen Aug 10, 2026 · Last updated Aug 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial asks whether GLP-1 medications, commonly used for type 2 diabetes and weight loss, can better control psoriatic arthritis symptoms than nutrition counseling alone. Adults with psoriatic arthritis who also have obesity and type 2 diabetes will be randomly assigned to receive either a GLP-1 drug or nutrition counseling. Over 24 weeks, researchers will track joint tenderness, swelling, skin involvement, and patient-reported well-being to see which approach leads to greater disease improvement.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
GLP-1 agonist drugs (used for diabetes and weight management) compared with nutrition counseling
What this could lead to
If GLP-1 drugs prove more effective than nutrition counseling, they could become a dual-purpose treatment for psoriatic arthritis and its common metabolic conditions.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 22 participants, so results may not apply broadly. GLP-1 drugs can cause side effects like nausea or digestive issues.
