Could a diabetes drug help obese patients get better knee replacements?

NCT ID NCT06807970

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This early-phase trial tests whether the weight-loss drug semaglutide can improve outcomes for obese patients waiting for total knee replacement. 54 participants will receive the drug for 48 weeks before and after surgery. The goal is to see if weight loss reduces pain and complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

semaglutide (a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, GLP-1 RA)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that weight loss with semaglutide before knee replacement reduces pain and complications in obese patients.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small trial (54 people) with no results yet. The drug may not improve outcomes and can cause side effects like nausea or pancreatitis.
