Could involving family in diabetes education improve blood sugar control?

NCT ID NCT04334109

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This trial tests whether a family-centered diabetes education program helps people with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar better than standard education. About 1,100 adults with type 2 diabetes and their family members take part. Participants are randomly assigned to either family education (where family members join sessions) or standard education (where only the patient attends). The main goal is to see changes in HbA1c levels after 12 weeks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Diabetes self-management education and support (behavioral intervention)

What this could lead to

If effective, family-centered diabetes education could improve blood sugar control more than standard education alone.

What could go wrong

This is a behavioral study, not a drug trial, so results may vary widely. The primary outcome is short-term (12 weeks), and long-term benefits are uncertain.
