Can a simple screening tool help cancer centers support families better?
NCT ID NCT04446728
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two strategies for helping pediatric cancer centers use the Psychosocial Assessment Tool (PAT), a questionnaire that identifies family emotional, social, and practical needs after a child's cancer diagnosis. Eighteen cancer programs across the U.S. are randomly assigned to receive either a basic training webinar or enhanced support including a local champion and monthly calls. The goal is to see which approach leads to more families being screened and better staff engagement, without directly treating the cancer itself.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Psychosocial Assessment Tool (PAT) screening and implementation strategies (training webinar, champion, consultation calls)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show the best way for cancer centers to routinely screen families for emotional and social needs, leading to better support for children with cancer and their families.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage implementation study (18 sites) focused on process, not patient health outcomes. Results may not apply to all centers, and the screening tool itself may not improve care if follow-up resources are limited.
