Family-Wide dental treatment may break the cycle of oral infections
NCT ID NCT07674888
First seen Jun 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study investigates how bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease spread among family members. Researchers will treat either the child alone, the child and parents, or all family members with professional dental cleaning. They will track bacterial transmission using DNA analysis and wearable devices. The goal is to see if treating everyone together reduces the return of harmful bacteria after dental treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Professional dental plaque disruption and oral hygiene treatment
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to family-based dental care strategies that reduce childhood tooth decay and gum disease by targeting bacterial spread within households.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage observational and interventional study, so results may not apply to all families. The treatment effects may be modest or temporary.
