Baking soda and bike rides: a new hope for kidney Patients' fatigue?

NCT ID NCT05928936

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests whether taking sodium bicarbonate pills and doing regular stationary bike exercise can improve exercise capacity in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Researchers will enroll 156 adults with CKD, kidney transplant recipients, or healthy controls. Participants will take sodium bicarbonate twice daily and exercise three times a week for 12 weeks. The main goal is to see if these interventions increase the amount of oxygen the body can use during exercise (VO2 peak).

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Sodium bicarbonate (taken as a pill) and supervised exercise training on a stationary bike

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to help people with chronic kidney disease feel less tired and be more active.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial with only 156 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The sodium bicarbonate dose may need frequent adjustment to avoid side effects like metabolic alkalosis.
