New drug cocktail aims to quiet ICU delirium without a breathing tube

NCT ID NCT07377981

First seen Feb 01, 2026 · Last updated May 03, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study tests whether a combination of two sedative drugs, esketamine and dexmedetomidine, can safely and effectively reduce the time ICU patients spend in a state of severe confusion and agitation (hyperactive delirium) while they are on non-invasive breathing support. About 132 adults will be randomly assigned to receive either the drug combo or standard care. The main goal is to see how long the delirium lasts, with a focus on avoiding the need for a breathing tube.
