Could a playlist be the new Pre-Surgery calm?

NCT ID NCT03415620

First seen Aug 07, 2026 ยท Last updated Aug 07, 2026

Summary

This trial tests whether listening to music before, during, and after surgery can lower anxiety, reduce pain, and cut down on painkiller use. About 410 healthy adults having day surgery, gynecologic surgery, or cesarean section will be involved. Participants in the music group will use an iPod with a playlist for 30 minutes around their operation, and their pain, anxiety, satisfaction, and medication use will be compared to those who don't listen to music.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Music listening via an iPod with earphones, with a playlist of different music genres, for 30 minutes before, during, and after surgery.
What this could lead to
If effective, music listening could become a simple, low-cost way to ease anxiety and pain and reduce painkiller use for people having surgery.
What could go wrong
The trial is early and results may not apply to all surgeries or patients. Music might not work for everyone, and the effect could be small.
