Diabetes drug could improve heart failure treatment
NCT ID NCT04438213
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 2 trial at Yale University is testing whether the diabetes drug ertugliflozin can help people with chronic heart failure manage fluid buildup better than a standard diuretic (metolazone) or a placebo. Sixty adults on daily diuretics will take one of the three treatments for six weeks. Researchers will measure changes in blood volume and sodium excretion to see if ertugliflozin offers unique benefits without causing dehydration.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ertugliflozin (a diabetes drug) and metolazone (a diuretic)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that ertugliflozin helps manage heart failure better than standard diuretics, with fewer side effects like dehydration.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study (60 people) looking at short-term effects. It may not prove long-term benefit or safety, and results may not apply to all heart failure patients.
