Diabetes drug shows promise for healing hearts after attack

NCT ID NCT07169981

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This completed study looked at whether the diabetes drug empagliflozin (Jardiance) can help repair heart damage in diabetic patients who had a major heart attack. 200 participants took either 10 mg or 25 mg of the drug daily for 6 months. Researchers measured changes in heart size, pumping strength, and overall function to see if the drug improves heart remodeling.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

empagliflozin (Jardiance)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that empagliflozin helps repair heart damage after a heart attack in diabetic patients, potentially improving heart function and reducing future heart problems.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed Phase 2 trial, so results are preliminary. The benefits seen may not be large or may not apply to all patients. The drug is already approved for diabetes and heart failure, so major new risks are unlikely, but side effects like dehydration or urinary infections are possible.
