Exercise after a blood clot in the lungs: a new hope for recovery?

NCT ID NCT07143539

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether starting a structured exercise and education program within a month of a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs) can prevent long-term problems like poor quality of life, shortness of breath, and reduced physical ability. About 160 hospitalized patients at higher risk for these issues will be randomly assigned to either the rehab program or standard care. Researchers will track changes in quality of life, exercise capacity, and symptoms over 180 days.

Active substance
exercise-based rehabilitation program
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that structured exercise soon after a pulmonary embolism helps patients feel better, breathe easier, and return to normal activities faster.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (160 participants) testing a non-drug intervention. Results may not apply to all patients, and the benefits might be modest or not statistically significant.
