Teens to get Weight-Loss drug right after surgery in new trial
NCT ID NCT06934655
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether restarting semaglutide (Wegovy) just two weeks after sleeve gastrectomy helps teens with severe obesity lose more weight than surgery alone. About 150 teens aged 12–18 who were already on semaglutide before surgery will be randomly assigned to restart the drug or receive standard care for 24 months. Researchers will track weight, blood sugar, and eating behaviors to see if early re-initiation is safe and effective.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Semaglutide (Wegovy) injection
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that restarting semaglutide soon after weight-loss surgery helps teens lose more weight and improve their health long-term.
What could go wrong
This is a single-center trial with 150 participants, so results may not apply to all teens. Side effects like nausea or vomiting are common with semaglutide, and the study is not yet recruiting.
