Could a diabetes drug shield your brain from stroke?

NCT ID NCT07282041

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether dulaglutide, a once-weekly diabetes injection, can improve blood flow in the brains of people with severely narrowed arteries. About 130 participants who recently had a mini-stroke or mild stroke will receive either standard care or dulaglutide plus standard care. Researchers will measure brain blood flow after one year and track strokes for two years.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Dulaglutide (a weekly injection used for diabetes)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new way to improve brain blood flow and reduce stroke risk in people with narrowed brain arteries.

What could go wrong

This is an early-to-mid stage trial with only 130 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug may not improve blood flow enough or could cause side effects like nausea.
