Can a Contrast-Free MRI match ultrasound for spotting Stroke-Causing blockages?

NCT ID NCT07756775

First seen Aug 11, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at 200 adults who have had an ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Each participant will receive two types of imaging: a non-contrast magnetic resonance angiography (NC-MRA) and a carotid Doppler ultrasound. The goal is to see how well these two methods agree in detecting and grading narrowing of the carotid arteries, which is a major cause of stroke. The findings could help doctors choose the best imaging approach for evaluating stroke patients.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Non-contrast magnetic resonance angiography (NC-MRA) and carotid Doppler ultrasonography
What this could lead to
If NC-MRA proves as good as or better than carotid Doppler, it could become a preferred, safer imaging option for evaluating stroke patients, potentially improving diagnosis and treatment planning.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, so it won't prove which method is better for patient outcomes. Results may not apply to all stroke patients, and NC-MRA may not be feasible for everyone due to MRI contraindications.
