Could two blood thinners save more hearts after bypass?
NCT ID NCT03560310
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two blood thinners (ticagrelor plus aspirin) against aspirin alone after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in people who recently had a heart attack or unstable angina. Over 2,200 participants are being followed for 12 months to see if the dual therapy reduces major heart problems like death, heart attack, or stroke. The goal is to find the best way to protect patients after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- ticagrelor and aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could lead to a better standard treatment after heart bypass surgery to prevent future heart attacks, strokes, or death.
- What could go wrong
- This is a late-stage trial, but adding a second blood thinner increases bleeding risk. The benefit may be small or not outweigh the risks for all patients.
