Can a heart drug combo help COPD lungs?

NCT ID NCT05567562

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether taking two common blood thinners (aspirin and clopidogrel) for two weeks can improve blood flow in the lungs of smokers with COPD. Fifteen current or former smokers with and without COPD participated. The goal was to see changes on a special CT scan, not to treat symptoms.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

aspirin and clopidogrel (dual anti-platelet therapy)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new way to improve blood flow in the lungs for people with COPD.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-phase study with only 15 participants. It is designed to measure changes in blood flow, not to prove any treatment benefit. Results may not apply to all COPD patients.
