First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This Mayo Clinic study tests a new device designed to clear fluid and debris from surgical drain tubes more effectively than the current method of using fingers. The trial will enroll 500 adults who have abdominal surgery with Jackson-Pratt drains. Nurses will rate how easy the device is to use, and researchers will check if it helps drains come out sooner.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
surgical drain stripping device
What this could lead to
If it works, this device could make drain care easier for nurses and possibly shorten how long patients need drains after surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage device study focused on usability, not a proven treatment. It may not meaningfully reduce drain time or complications.
