Can a facebook group help you lose weight as well as a weekly video call?
NCT ID NCT06393725
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two digital weight loss programs for people with obesity. One program uses weekly live video meetings, while the other uses a private Facebook group that participants can access anytime. The goal is to see if the flexible, on-demand option works as well as the scheduled one. About 328 participants will be followed for two years to track weight loss, engagement, and cost.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
behavioral intervention (digital weight loss program based on the Diabetes Prevention Program)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a flexible, on-demand online weight loss program works just as well as scheduled video meetings, making effective weight loss support more accessible.
What could go wrong
This is a non-inferiority trial, meaning it aims to show the asynchronous method is not worse than the synchronous one, not that it is better. The results may not apply to people who are not active on Facebook or lack reliable internet access.
