Low-Salt diet may shield veterans from heart failure

NCT ID NCT03170375

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a low-salt, heart-healthy diet (DASH diet) can prevent heart failure in veterans with high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome. 71 veterans received counseling and some also got tailored messages via smartphone or email. The goal was to see if the diet could reduce artery stiffness and heart damage that leads to heart failure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

dietary counseling and tailored messaging via smartphone or email

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a simple dietary change helps prevent heart failure in people with high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 71 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Dietary changes can be hard to maintain long-term.
