Could pacing the diaphragm ease heart failure?

NCT ID NCT07392749

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether electrically pacing the diaphragm through a vein near the heart can improve heart function in people with heart failure. Ten adults who are already scheduled for a heart device (CRT) will have an extra pacing lead placed temporarily. Researchers will check if the diaphragm can be paced safely and if it helps the heart pump better, with follow-up one week after discharge.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

diaphragm synchronized pacing (a procedure using a pacing lead placed in a vein near the diaphragm)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new way to help the heart pump more effectively in people with heart failure, potentially improving symptoms and quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small study with only 10 participants and a short follow-up. The procedure is experimental, and it may not work or could cause complications like lead dislodgement or vein injury.
