Simple foot tests could prevent thousands of Diabetes-Related amputations
NCT ID NCT05009602
First seen Oct 31, 2025
Summary
This study tested several simple bedside exams—like blood pressure cuffs on the ankle and toe—to see which best detects poor leg circulation (peripheral arterial disease) in people with diabetes. Over 600 participants underwent these tests along with advanced imaging (CTA or MRA) to confirm results. The goal is to find the most accurate and cost-effective way to diagnose circulation problems early, potentially preventing many of the 7,000 diabetes-related leg amputations that occur each year in the UK.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could identify the most accurate and cost-effective bedside test for detecting poor leg circulation in people with diabetes, potentially reducing amputations.
What could go wrong
This is a completed diagnostic study, not a treatment trial. The results may show that no single test is clearly superior, or that the best test is not practical in all clinics.
Conditions
