Can a telehealth program help older adults prevent diabetes?

NCT ID NCT05166785

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a diabetes prevention program delivered via telehealth works as well as the same program done in person for adults aged 65 and older with prediabetes. About 238 participants will be randomly assigned to either a telehealth or in-person group, and researchers will track changes in weight and blood sugar levels over 12 months. The goal is to find effective ways to help the growing older adult population reduce their risk of developing diabetes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) tailored for older adults, delivered via telehealth or in-person

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a telehealth version of the diabetes prevention program works as well as in-person sessions for older adults, making it easier for many to access and reduce their diabetes risk.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small study (238 participants) comparing two delivery methods, not testing a new drug. Results may not apply to all older adults, and adherence or weight loss might differ between groups.
