Diabetes drug showdown: which combo works best for obese patients?
NCT ID NCT07531108
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested three different diabetes treatments in 186 overweight or obese adults newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Participants received either empagliflozin plus metformin, sitagliptin plus metformin, or metformin alone for 12 weeks. Researchers measured changes in blood markers called omentin-1 and resistin, along with blood sugar and weight, to see which combination worked best.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Empagliflozin, Sitagliptin, and Metformin (oral diabetes drugs)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors choose the best initial drug combination for obese patients with type 2 diabetes, potentially improving blood sugar control and weight management.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed Phase 4 study in one city in Iraq, so results may not apply to all populations. The main focus was on blood markers, not long-term health outcomes like heart disease or survival.
