NCT ID NCT03012984

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study looked at whether adding a sedative called dexmedetomidine to standard pain relief can prevent delirium (sudden confusion) in older adults after cancer surgery. Delirium is common in elderly patients and can lead to worse recovery. The trial involved 1,500 patients aged 65-89 having cancer surgery, and compared those who got dexmedetomidine with those who did not. The goal was to see if this approach lowers the chance of delirium in the first five days after surgery.
