Heart surgery drug trial aims to shield kidneys from harm

NCT ID NCT04633889

Summary

This study is testing whether a drug called deferoxamine can prevent kidney injury in patients having heart surgery with a heart-lung bypass machine. The trial involves 320 adults at higher risk for this complication, who will receive either the drug or a placebo before and during their operation. Researchers believe iron released during surgery may damage the kidneys, and this drug aims to bind that iron to protect them.
