Dentist's deep clean may delay dialysis for kidney patients
NCT ID NCT07635797
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a deep dental cleaning (subgingival instrumentation) can slow the progression of chronic kidney disease in 40 adults with diabetes and stage IV-V kidney disease. The cleaning aims to reduce inflammation that may worsen kidney function. Researchers will measure kidney function and blood markers over time to see if the treatment delays the need for dialysis.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
subgingival instrumentation (deep gum cleaning)
What this could lead to
If it works, this simple dental procedure could help delay the need for dialysis in people with advanced kidney disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, non-randomized study with only 40 participants, so results may not be reliable or apply to everyone. The effect on kidney function may be minimal.
