Parkinson's breakthrough: combining brain surgery with physical therapy boosts mobility
NCT ID NCT04953637
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 05, 2026 · Updated 22 times
Summary
This study looks at whether adding physiotherapy to deep brain stimulation (DBS) helps people with Parkinson's disease move around more safely and independently in their communities. DBS is a brain surgery that improves stiffness, slowness, and tremors, but it hasn't been shown to increase community mobility and may even raise fall risk. The study will compare 60 adults with Parkinson's who receive DBS plus physiotherapy versus DBS alone, measuring changes in how far they travel outside their homes and their balance.
