DASH diet put to the test against kidney stones

NCT ID NCT06210009

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a DASH-style diet (rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy) can reduce the risk of kidney stones compared to a typical Western diet. Forty-eight adults with a history of kidney stones will eat specially prepared meals for one week. Researchers will measure urine chemistry to see if the DASH diet lowers stone-forming substances.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a healthy diet lowers the risk of forming kidney stones, providing a simple prevention strategy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, short-term study (48 people, 1 week) that only measures urine markers, not actual stone formation. Results may not apply to everyone.
