Balloon trick during heart attack may cut death risk

NCT ID NCT03787745

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a special balloon procedure called ischemic postconditioning in 1800 people having a heart attack. After opening the blocked artery, doctors briefly inflate and deflate a balloon four times to see if it reduces heart damage. The goal is to lower the chance of heart failure or death.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ischemic postconditioning (a balloon procedure during heart attack treatment)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could reduce the risk of heart failure and death after a heart attack.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with no phase, and the procedure is experimental. It may not improve outcomes and could carry risks from the balloon inflation.
