Chill or zap? new study tests cold and laser to cut root canal pain
NCT ID NCT07627867
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether using cold or laser-activated fluids during a root canal can reduce pain and kill more bacteria than standard treatment. Sixty adults with an infected lower molar will receive one of four rinses: room-temperature, cold, heated, or laser-activated sodium hypochlorite. Pain levels and bacterial counts will be measured over the next few days to see which approach works best.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) at different temperatures or activated by laser
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could point toward a better way to reduce pain and bacteria after a root canal, making the procedure more comfortable.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatments are compared to standard care, and any benefit may be modest.
